The Mandala Of Perfect Happiness by Christopher Harvey, 2008
[ARTIST'S STATEMENT] This is a 2008 time-lapse art video of a sculpture installation made in 2007, both called The Mandala Of Perfect Happiness. It is a trick-film, an homage to the earliest fantasy films in cinema, framed as an imaginary documentary with a dream sequence embedded in the middle. The original installation was part of a body of work utilizing found and discarded plastic to examine themes of compulsion, consumption, aspiration, and transformation through the placement and arrangement of mundane material into ritual patterns and devotional forms. [AWARDS / PREVIOUS SCREENINGS]The Mandala Of Perfect Happiness video has been screened at: "T-Minus" Time Art Festival, Galapagods Art space, Brooklyn, NY "Out Of This World" Group Show, Albany International Airport, Albany NY [BRIEF BIOGRAPHY]Chris Harvey is a Troy, NY based multimedia artist and art director for motion and still graphics. Awards received include the Emmy, Peabody, and three colors of Broadcast Design Association awards, as well as recognition at film festivals in Chicago, New York, and Cologne. Originally interested in painting and experimental film, Chris was a commercial animation art director fifteen years before returning to a more personal studio practice in the year 2000. As a catalyst for that transition Chris provided visual support to pioneer composers of long-form contemplative music, including supervising production for the epic 6+hour installation DVD The Well-tuned Piano in the Magenta Lights for La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, and illustrated design for the concept CD Atlantis Nath for Terry Riley. Chris was chosen in 2003 as creative director for the American Museum of Natural Historys state-of-the-art music and light show SonicVision at the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. In 2004 and 2005, in collaboration with artist Leah Dixon, Chris generated abstract real-time projection environments for David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir, performing at the Rubin Museum of Art in NYC and the Kripalu Center in Stockbridge, Mass.
